Help me understand - diamond stone sharpening ...

A strop is much more forgiving than a fine stone in burr removing, meaning that you don't have to be as precise. For 300-600 grit stone, the burr will be big enough to feel with your finger tips, so you will know when you have form a burr. For a 1200 grit stone, the burr is smaller, you can feel it, but for beginners, it's really hard to feel them.

Should you want the flush thing, a stone or sharpening plate is an option to keep going. Note: I used a wet stone and have not seen others use one for this. Seemed to work well but a worn or wavy stone would not be good. The flat plate would be preferred. Fret finishing files are …

In the meantime, I have discovered that I really like jumbo frets, so, I have struggled with 1) buying a "W" neck) $360ish, 2) paying someone to refret the guitar $400ish, or 3) buying tools and doing the refret myself. I have eight other guitars, all of good quality, but nothing vintage, and some of them will need new frets at some point.

Would you attempt to do your own fret dressing? - Gibson ...

I do all my own fret work, but I also build guitars from scratch. You are welcome to try and do some work on your own guitar's frets. I use a fine grit sharpening stone to do leveling. I do not recommend using radius blocks to level frets. Check the levelness of the frets using a high quality straight edge approx. 4-6" in length.

Which luthier tool would you recommend for spot fret ...

The stone is the sand. As the stone gets used it will actually wear in the center and take on the radius of the necks you refret most. I suppose you could speed that process by finding something made of cement that was 9" or 12" round and running it lengthwise to create a radius. I do mostly 12" radiuses so the stone has worn to that curvature.

I used a small sharpening stone on my last one for some really gnarly frets. Nev'r Dull is the shiznit. It is the only easy decent way to polish the frets. I can go from 600 to mirrors with it, pretty quickly. For fallaway, I use 2 or 3 layers of blue tape over the 11 and 12 frets, and use that to "pitch" the 6" long or so bar on the top frets.

Thoughts after a Sharpening Session w/ Water Stones

To be honest, I think the best sharpening system I have ever seen is the one that James Krenov used in his The Fine Art of Cabinet Making. A simple hand cranked grinding wheel with a shop built tool rest is used to establish the bevel and then the blade is honed on an oil stone. How simple and elegant, a part of a handmade life.

I levelled them with a sharpening stone, and they never really got crowned because I don't have a crowning file, but they do OK. Same frets in there today. This is the third nut the guitar's had. Back in the 80's I was reading guitar books written in the 70's and the trend then was for a brass nut which was supposed to help sustain.

Keep this in mind if you take your guitar in to have this kind of work done. If it's significantly less than a full refret, something may not be "right" (depending on how much work is required, the frets are usually in pretty bad shape before a guitar comes in) and if it's not, you might prefer a full refret.

Anyone file and "dress" their own frets? - The Unofficial ...

Many of the better repair people use a three square (triangular) file with safe edges for rounding frets. Get a fine cut 6" three square, and dress off the corners on your sharpening stone. It takes a little practice to round up frets nicely with one of these, but does a really good job once you've gotten the hang of it.
